200+ Resume Action Verbs That Make Recruiters Stop Scrolling

Why Action Verbs Make or Break Your Resume

The first word of every bullet point on your resume sets the tone. Start with "Responsible for" and the recruiter is already glazing over. Start with "Spearheaded" or "Drove" and you have their attention.

Strong action verbs do three things: they show initiative (you did something, not just watched it happen), they imply impact (something changed because of you), and they pass ATS filters (recruiters search for these terms).

Leadership & Management

Use these when describing team leadership, strategy, or organizational impact:

  • Led, Directed, Managed, Supervised, Oversaw, Orchestrated, Steered, Championed, Mentored, Coached
  • Established, Founded, Pioneered, Launched, Initiated, Introduced, Spearheaded
  • Aligned, Unified, Mobilized, Recruited, Cultivated, Delegated, Empowered
Before: "Responsible for managing a team of 8 developers"
After: "Led cross-functional team of 8 developers, delivering 3 products on time and 12% under budget"

Achievement & Impact

Use these when highlighting measurable results:

  • Increased, Grew, Expanded, Boosted, Maximized, Doubled, Tripled, Surpassed, Exceeded
  • Reduced, Cut, Decreased, Eliminated, Minimized, Lowered, Saved, Streamlined
  • Generated, Drove, Delivered, Produced, Secured, Captured, Won, Earned
Before: "Helped improve sales numbers"
After: "Drove 34% increase in quarterly revenue ($2.1M) through targeted enterprise sales strategy"

Technical & Engineering

  • Engineered, Architected, Developed, Built, Coded, Programmed, Deployed, Configured
  • Automated, Optimized, Refactored, Migrated, Integrated, Debugged, Scaled, Tested
  • Designed, Prototyped, Implemented, Iterated, Shipped, Released, Maintained

Communication & Collaboration

  • Presented, Communicated, Articulated, Briefed, Reported, Published, Authored
  • Collaborated, Partnered, Coordinated, Facilitated, Negotiated, Mediated, Influenced
  • Advocated, Persuaded, Convinced, Educated, Trained, Onboarded

Analysis & Research

  • Analyzed, Researched, Investigated, Evaluated, Assessed, Audited, Benchmarked
  • Identified, Discovered, Uncovered, Diagnosed, Mapped, Modeled, Forecasted
  • Synthesized, Interpreted, Quantified, Measured, Tracked, Monitored

Creative & Design

  • Created, Designed, Conceptualized, Crafted, Produced, Illustrated, Visualized
  • Reimagined, Revamped, Transformed, Modernized, Rebranded, Curated
  • Innovated, Invented, Devised, Formulated, Composed, Shaped

Verbs to Avoid (ATS Red Flags)

These passive phrases signal a lack of ownership and impact. Remove them from your resume immediately:

  • "Responsible for" — vague, passive, says nothing about results
  • "Helped" — implies a supporting role even when you led
  • "Assisted" — same problem as "helped"
  • "Worked on" — what did you actually do?
  • "Was involved in" — passive voice, no ownership
  • "Participated in" — suggests you were present, not driving
